Girl About Town

Some photos from Saturday:

We’re currently in Norfolk, Virginia, where my friends Lauren and John live. Even though I should be sleeping, I decided to take advantage of the hotel’s free wifi and update my blog, while watching I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. I have my priorities in order, obviously. Miku keeps looking at me with this sleepy gaze, visually pleading with me to go to sleep. She’s a little dependent.

Bobby surprised me with these lovely shoes that I was eyeing. I was waiting for them to go on sale, and when they did, he ordered them for me! I later found out that he and Kim had a wee scuffle, because she wanted to get them for me. I’m a lucky gal! They’re surprisingly comfortable…although I ended up changing into boots later in the day, for running errands. Since I only brought three pairs of shoes with me, I’ll probably be wearing them quite a bit on this trip.

vintage beret – thrifted
vintage, double-breasted sweater coat – thrifted and altered to fit (washed to shrink the wool and took the sleeves and body in)
bow blouse – thrifted and altered (took up the shoulder seam/removed shoulder pads, made short sleeves)
plaid skirt – thrifted and altered to fit/shortened
grey tights – h&m
grey heels – jeffrey campbell; a gift from Bobby!
vintage purse – gift from my little sister, Tessa

Speaking of Bewitched, I really resent the Darrin replacement. When I was younger, I had a weird crush on Darrin number one (Dick York) and never got over them replacing him with the other Dick, even if it did happen before I was born (don’t ever look up the reason for his replacement; it’s depressing). I was an odd kid. I also loved the professor on Gilligan’s Island and Tony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie. I watched a lot of Nick at Nite. Did you have any weird crushes, when you were younger?

  1. I totally agree with you concerning the Dick York replacement – he's so dull. I never watched Gilligan's Island but I did / do have a crush on Gregory Peck & Cary Grant.

  2. oh goodness I (just) remember Nick at Nite! How awesome was it!I dont remember having any crushes but i was in love with Tabitha for quite some time.

The blouse looks absolutely amazing, it is such a gorgeous colour on you πŸ™‚ and I love the shoes, there are some in black but (un?)fortunately they dont have them in my size… haha.

I dont much fancy the Darrin replacement either… ugh. haha lovely post, hope youre enjoying your holidays!

  3. Cut shoes.

Jonathan Brandis was one of my biggest junior high through high school crushes (aside from Leonardo and Johnny, but who wasn’t/isn’t crazy about them?). One of his better-known roles was as a soccer player who gets disguised as a girl so he can play on a girls’ soccer team in the film “Ladybugs.” Very juvenile. But I loved it. And he was on the series “Seaquest,” wearing some cute little tight-fitting wetsuits opposite some very cute dolphins. He fell off the radar for a while, and ended up committing suicide about five years ago. Very sad. I wanted to marry him when I was 12.

  4. Oh, that jacket looks so soft and warm… very lovely outfit!

I didn’t actually have many crushes when I was a little kid, pretty strange. Only one I remember was Bert from Mary Poppins, nobody beated him! Handsome, good singer and dancer, funny, and depending on the day he was a musician, artist or chimney sweep! Is there any better? πŸ˜€

  5. haha, you really ARE one lucky girl to have so many people eager to make you happy around you! πŸ™‚
And once again, I simply adore your outfit! You are such an inspiration, thrifting and making stuff by yuorself.. I never could, I’m not exactly a sewing genius or something like that πŸ˜‰ I love the jacket!

  6. I totally dig the shoes (and the jacket for that matter) and am jealous of your warm weather.

I was in love with Jonathan Brandeis as a youngster. I’m still in mourning :'(

  7. Hey you were in my neck of the woods! Did you go out anywhere special in Norfolk?

I had a crush on Bruce Wayne, not Batman but Bruce Wayne from the Saturday morning cartoons that used to play on ABC πŸ˜›

  8. Love the shoes! and the whole outfit of course.

I had a big crush on Kermit the Frog when I was little. Then, when I got a little older, I crushed on Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the TV cartoon). I guess I have a thing for green guys…

  9. I had a crush on the Beastmaster. It was this awful show that was on tv when I was in like 1st through 3rd grade, sort of in the similar timeslot as Xena and Tarzan. I had a thing for hot, nearly naked jungle men with blonde floppy hair and gleaming, dirt smeared muscles oh god i am such a freak.

  10. I watched a lot of Nick at Nite too! Bewitched was my fave, and the whole Darren switchover (and color switchover) were very disconcerting. (Of course you realize I HAVE to look up the reason now!?). I always fantasized about having 3 daughters and naming them Endora, Samantha, and Tabitha πŸ™‚

Get Smart was also beloved by me, Agent 99 rocked that Mod look like no one else.

Anyway darling, you look as amazing as ever. You seriously blow my mind.

  11. You look amazing as always! I love your blog. My lovely sister is taking me to New York from the UK, I’m so excited! Can you recommend some good thrift/vintage places? I would be most grateful πŸ™‚

    Love, Nell

  12. oh! i’m pretty sure I went there in my USA travels and it was my favourite place…
    well Woodbridge VA was.

I have no idea if i’m just imagining they are close!
What beautiful shoes! and whole outft of course!

  13. To answer a few questions:

    – We went to Norfolk particularly to visit my friends, so we hung out with them, went to lunch in Ghent and had a play date with our pups:)

    – Since when does wearing tights often mean that someone has a fetish? When it’s cold out, you have these options: pants, tights, or freezing to death with bare legs. I wear mostly dresses and skirts, and prefer warmth over bare legs.

    – Thrift stores and vintage shops in NY: I’d skip the overpriced digs at Screaming Mimi’s and head into Brooklyn, for Beacon’s Closet, real thrift stores (there’s a bunch of Salvation Armies and Goodwills scattered about) and such. There’s a place called Monk in Park Slope that is hit or miss. I used to hit up Love Saves the Day in St. Mark’s (Manhattan), but I heard it shut down:(

  14. You are so beautiful! & I love your style! Perfectly put together and exactly what I'd wear. ^.^ I think I also have the same haircut as you.. and I always have to wear my hair up because recently I got a shitty haircut and it looks horrible when I wear it down :'( You have definitely become a huge inspiration on me! (already!) & you only live in Brooklyn! I love Brooklyn to pieces.
Anyway, I just came across your blog and I love it (clearly). I can't wait to read your future entries. And visit your store! I'm so sad I don't have any $$ at the moment. I need new clothes & headbands terribly (which I see you make a ton of headbands~ which I adore). I swear I'll probably be your number 1 customer! hehe.
    love, dayna

  15. i always had crushes on older guys, like steve martin *swoon* and jack nicholson. and the professor from gilligan’s island for sure! and my high school english teacher who was probably 50 at the time πŸ˜› i think it’s because my dad is a lot older than most dads and that somehow plays a part in daughters liking men *just like their dad*, not to sound too weird.

  16. I hardly remember my crushes from way back! which is ok because I had questionably taste in guys!
also, your blog ROCKS! I nominated you in my blog πŸ™‚

  17. I was reading the current issue of Lucky while on the elliptical today, & I saw YOU in a Reebok ad! It was so cool to feel like I "knew" someone in a magazine…even though I definitely don't know you. You looked gorgeous by the way!

  18. Love those tights, and your style! Your photos are great and the shop looks good. Do you have any NY thifting tips? I’ll be doing an internship there soon.
