Governor’s Island Jazz Age Lawn Party is our favorite event in New York; it’s our summer tradition to attend. Bobby and I dress up, pack a picnic, and ride the ferry back in time to the prohibition era, usually with my little sister Tessa and her friends (or boyfriend!), who visit during the summer. Tessa and Ally, who are now in college, have been going with us since they were wee little freshmen in high school (or was it middle school?!), and I hope the tradition continues. We love watching Michael Arenella and The Dreamland Orchestra, The Dreamland Follies, The Minsky Sisters, and other performances, but half the fun is in the people watching. Almost everyone dresses up, and the outfits are incredible – you’ll often spot Bill Cunningham roaming around the crowds in his blue jacket, snapping the decked out attendees. If you missed the last party, don’t worry! There are two more dates, this summer: August 15th and 16th. Make sure to buy your tickets, early, and start planning those outfits. Check out my previous posts from The Jazz Age Lawn Party, if you want some more outfit ideas: here, here, here, and here. I told you, it’s our summer tradition!
