Governor’s Island Jazz Age Lawn Party 2016
Governor’s Island Jazz Age Lawn Party 2016
The Governor’s Island Jazz Age Lawn Party is my very favorite summer tradition in NYC. Chichi usually comes with us every year, but she had to work and couldn’t attend. Fortunately, my sister Amanda and my niece and nephews (Roxy and Ryder are her kids; Jackson is Nicole’s) were visiting, so we brought them along for the festivities. We didn’t have much time to plan our outfits, so I bought a couple of dresses at a thrift store and completely reconstructed them for Amanda and me, the night before the Jazz Age Lawn Party. Roxy’s dress also came from a thrift shop (I made her lace jacket), and she watched YouTube videos to figure out how to do her hair. She is the most precious little girl; I adore her and my nephews (and baby niece, Lily) to no end.
We always attend the Jazz Age Lawn Party, but it’s always extra special to share it with out-of-towners. Riding the ferry to Governor’s Island, renting a surrey bike and riding around, dressing up and dancing to Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra, taking photos on the hanging moon…it’s just the best. It feels so far away from the hustle and bustle of NYC, and truly feels like a different time. We even had tintype portraits done of our whole family, which is such a special souvenir. If you’re in or visiting NYC in August, make sure to check out the Jazz Age Lawn Party (info here). It’s your last chance, before next year!
