Bag Lady

My back hurts. A lot. This is due to a variety of reasons:

  • Our box spring couldn’t fit up the stairs, so we just have the mattress on the bed.
  • I am hunched over a sewing machine for hours a day.
  • I carry my life in my bag.

From time to time, I’ve thought about doing a “what’s in my bag” post, but then I remember that I can’t fit that much stuff in one frame. I carry bags that are unnecessarily huge, and still find a way to test their max capacity. But my back hurts. My shoulders hurt. When Jenny sent me this little tiny bag, I decided to give myself a break and carry it around for a few days. It is so cute and so light. But let me tell you, it was difficult for me to pack this bag with only essentials; I am not a practical girl. So I have a question for all of you girls who carry around cute little clutches and tiny handbags: how do you do it? Teach me how to downsize. I know I don’t need half of the stuff I carry with me…but what if I do? 🙂

Also…to fellow animal lovers: how do you wear black? I love wearing black, but I rarely wear much of it, because it seems like no matter how many lint rollers I use, my animals’ hair always follows me. Any secrets you want to share?

That necklace is beautiful, as is your dress! Unfortunately I can't give you any advice on downsizing your purse, I'm just as bad for carrying around unnecessary items.

  2. Liv says:

Your dress is adorable and, as usual, your make-up is flawless.! 🙂

I have one those Ally Sheedy in Breakfast Club kinda bags, so no help from me either!

  3. Smacko says:

Oh I have a thing for huge bags too. Right now I have a little/medium one and it's a little frustrating. I can't carry snacks anymore 🙁

    Love and Turtledoves,

  4. ♥Lola says:

Ouch! I don't have any tips sorry, I'm probably as bad as you 🙂 Love the makeup you're wearing, would love you to do a tutorial when you have time.

  5. Rebecca says:

I have two cats and a pug, so I deal with lots of pet hair. I use lint rollers, and clean the furniture frequently with one of those Pledge pet hair removers.

  6. Lovers, Saints & Sailors says:

That lighting is gorgeous. I can hardly wait until I can take pictures when it's light out.

I don't have pets so I can't offer help there.

And though my bag isn't super huge, my shoulders hurt too so I'm probably no help at all.

    Good luck!

  7. dear kate says:

how romantic, this look! i love the necklaces!

  8. Polina says:

You've got the pretty, girly look downpat! Gorgeous!

  9. Chelsea Whipps says:

I am cursed (ok, well not "cursed") with a black and white cat, so I lose no matter what colour I wear..if I wear black, his white hairs stand out on me, and if I wear white, his black hairs stick to everything ! However, he's cute so I overlook this.

  10. Shannon Lambert says:

Every time I go through a security check (often cause of bars, clubs, concerts and traveling) I get the comment "You must be a minimalist" which could be further from the truth. But my purse is clean and uncluttered.

What do you need daily? Not what are you reaching for once in a while or want but honestly need. For me it is cell phone, keys, wallet. That is it. Everything else is a want.

What wants find their way into my purse? Burt's Bees, MP3 player, lunch (when I am going to work) and sunglasses.

Ensure you have a big organized wallet. Instead of having one small wallet, a cheque (crazy Canadian English for check) book, scattered cards/ID and a change purse find a wallet then can hold all of this and more.

Purge weekly. Throw out all those random receipts and chewing gum wrappers that somehow find their own little home in your purse.

Mostly, stop reasoning with yourself why you may need 3 pens, a sewing kit, 2 different lipsticks, a pocket mirror, a couple tampons and that huge assembly of different key chains. There will be days when something you could use isn't in your purse, but they are far and few between. Your back will thank you and looking for something important will be so much more easier when your purse is light and uncluttered

  11. Lexie says:

I love the outfit but especially the makeup. As far as the black clothing and animals situation, I usually have the same problem. I mostly just try to keep my black clothes out of reach until I leave the house and I dont sit on any furniture in my house. I dont get why it sticks to black clothes and not other colors. Life would be so much easier if it stuck to white or other light colors, but the hair is so much more noticeable on black.

  12. Kendra says:

Hey gorgeous! I am with you on the big bag thing! But when I am torn between wanting to carry a cute little purse but feeling like I need a more stuff with me, I compromise. I bring a big bag with the "might need" junk, and a clutch with the essentials in it. I will leave the big bag in my car, and bring the clutch into the bar/dinner/party/whatnot. That way if I all of a sudden need that obscure lip color that has been floating around my bag untouched for months. I am assured that it's still in the car and I can run out and get it. 🙂

  13. browniesprinkles says:

I, like you, carry my life in my bag. This is what is just inside my makeup bag: eyeliner, perfume palm, mini tweezers, oxi clean spray, two lip glosses, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, concealer, blush, and floss. Phew. That's only the makeup bag! I've learned to downsize and during the summer I carry a small bag with only the essentials: A coin purse that fits bills and credit cards, mini hand sanitizer, travel size lotion and one lip gloss. (Keys and cell phone are a given) Oh and I always carry a tiny moleskin notebook and pen with me.

  14. anna says:

Your makeup! It's awesome, I love it. And your outfit too, of course.

I only just got a relatively small purse a few weeks ago, and it's made my life so easy! I keep my wallet, my phone, and my keys in there, of course. I usually have 3 or 4 pens, just in case, sunglasses, hand sanitizer, and maybe my iPod. Sometimes things I don't need find their way in, but with such a small bag, I have to keep things simple! It's just about controlling yourself. (:

  15. Jen says:

My husband calls my bags my "luggage" or "suitcase". I don't ever use a small bag unless I'm going to a wedding or someplace formal.

I love your make-up in this post, and of course the outfit. I'm not a fan of this type of dress with a vest but I DO love the dress and ruffled vest by themselves. They are darling!

  16. ming says:

Hi, I've been a long time lurker on your blog and I've always enjoyed your beautiful outfits. I've just got to respond to this post because I share some of your carry all obsession. However, I would say downsize and do it bravely. Take things out of your bag, reevaluate whether you need them in the same way that you would reevaluate whether a piece belongs in your closet. If you haven't used it in a few months – take it out and leave it out. Your back is sooooo important and seeing as you seem to strain it sewing, giving your shoulders a break and pampering your back when you can (exercise, stretching, memory foam) is important. In summary, downsize and do it for your health. You want to be able to make those fabulous clothes for as long as you want!
-ming. (the worried grandmother you never knew you had. i didn't know either apparently)

  17. Ollie Otson says:

I love these photos and that dress. The layering with the skirt is amazing.

As for downsizing purses, I used to carry around a huge bag. It would always have a large bottle of water, a book, and a wallet in it, amongst other things (generally some snacks and such). I eventually realized, for day to day activity, I didn't need to always have a book with me or a wallet full of cards I never used, so I started downsizing. Gradually. Now, I have a little, vintage, beaded clutch I love to death that I carry everywhere. And I only carry the necessities: cash, my bank card, my license, my phone, my iPod, and my keys. If I need other things, generally when I'm going to work, like a book or my lunch, I'll throw them in a reusable shopping bag and run off to work.

  18. Zabrinah says:

You look fabulous! Love the open toed shoes!

Best wishes from one blogger to another,

  19. Rio says:

Very cute outfit! I have a problem wearing black, too, because of my cute furry puppies :). The minute I put anything dark on, it becomes immediately covered in white and red fur… not cute! I wish I knew some trick to help us both out!

  20. Josephine says:

I love the outfit! the frills are the best part!

my mom and a few of my friends are bag ladies ! I can't do it, I might carry many things but not everything.

try to put something like a heating pad on your back! it should help!

  21. libys11 says:

love the romantic frills and details of both the dress and the vest!!! wonderful make-up too! 😀

    Animated Confessions

  22. Kaylie Marie says:

My purse is huge. Really, my cat can fit in it comfortably, because whenever it's open she likes to snuggle in. I don't have any tips on downsizing, but I do like bags that have both short and long straps, so if one shoulder ever hurts too much I can sling it across my chest.

I love your vesty thing. 🙂

  23. Anisha says:

    1. This might be my favorite outfit that you have ever worn. I love them all, but this one wins. LOVE the dress with the necklace and vesty. and the makeup!
    2. Just take your wallet, phone and keys and a lip product in case you want to touch up- but only ONE. If you use a big wallet, cut out the non essentials and keep only your bank card, credit card, license, and cash in a smaller wallet/card holder. Keep the rest in a separate case at HOME. Take things out of it when you know you need them. The only time I have ever used a purse larger than a clutch is when i travel. Even then, i keep the clutch packed inside so I can grab and go if I need to.
    3. Keep a lint roller right by your front door. roll your black clothes right before you leave- including bags, scarves, etc. even if they aren't black, bc they catch the pet hair too and it WILL end up on your awesome black dress.

    hope that helps!

  24. ainikki says:

I love this outfit, necklace looks like its from Glemurai:-) But I am suprised because you have been wearing a lot of neutrals. Where is your colourful style?

  25. Amy Antlers says:

Honestly, I've pretty much given up and have embraced the fur. I have two cats – one light, one dark, so you can see their fur on pretty much everything I wear! I use the sticky rollers on myself before I head out the door, but that's it. I wouldn't want to stop cuddling them :p

  26. Shelby says:

get dressed in the hallway of your apartment. its is the only way wearing black with animals works!

  27. Rachel says:

Oh wow, I LOVE the neckline on that dress. It's gorgeous!

As for the pet hair problem, do I ever empathize. I have two creamish cats and one that's white with black spots, so lint rollers are a fact of life for me. The worst is when I thoroughly lint roll myself in my apartment, which has lousy lighting, and then go into the sun and realize my black clothes are still pretty furry. One tip that I have is to get a furminator brush, if you don't have one already. It helps cut down on shedding a lot by removing loose pet hair before it gets on your clothes. They're pretty cheap and come in dog and cat versions, though I don't know why you couldn't use one on both. 28. Alice says:

    You look very nice 🙂

  29. Rūta says:

    Amazing outfit, very elegantly romantic.

I can "manage" smaller bag only on weekends or when going for a walk /evening in the city. I just don't need many things then. But when going to work I need a big one to put scarf, umbrella, few fruit to eat during day, sunglasses, a book or magazine as I love to read something during my luch, phone, purse. I guess it's easier for those who are allways with their own car as they can "store" a lot of things there.

  30. Jen says:

i seriously can't get over how gorgeous you look in these photos. this outfit looks as if it was made for you. 🙂

  31. Velvet says:

I don't like heavy bags, so I try to carry just what I need! Cell phone, wallet (with band aids inside), my lipstick and the keys.

I think you may start trying to carry less things than you use to, so that you can check which ones you really need.

Sorry about your back, I hope you get over it soon.

  32. mariska says:

    totally love the vest!

  33. Bea says:

    Hi Keiko!

I am quite your opposite. I have no large bags at all and sometimes my tiny purses hang open because I am too stubborn to bring a bigger bag. I basically keep my cellphone, glasses and money inside. It's just a lot lighter, saves time and allows me to be very mobile. 🙂

Also my cats shed all over my clothes too. Sometimes my friends would laugh at my fur covered jeans. One time I went out to an event and forgot my lint roller! I spent ages in the car picking each hair out of my dress. 🙁 The best suggestion I could come up with is to store all dark colors in the closet then dash out of your pad before any animals get to you.

  34. Charlie says:

you look gorgeous! I've got two guine pigs, and I ALWAYS have hair on my black clothes, but I don't mind. Not much of it anyway, so I just pick it up and say in a little voice I use with them "Hello Mommy" 😀 people might think I'm a bit crazy ^^

  35. aroselikethis says:

Your eye make up is beautiful i wish i could od mine half as well as that, your one of my fave bloggers and really help with my inspiration for my outfits and work 🙂 cheers.

  36. Kim says:

Up until recently, I carried around a big bag. Now I carry around a very slim purse (from Fossil) that carries only my wallet, phone, work badge, keys, lip balm, and some paper. Sometimes I even bring my camera and USB cords (for phone and camera). Luckily – and I think this is the key part – all of these items are slim and small (save for my wallet and keys) so they can fit easily. Everything else I used to carry, I no longer miss – maybe one day, but this has worked for me for the last month and hopefully for much longer 🙂

  37. angsthase says:

I rarely buy stuff without pockets. I hate having to lug around a bag. I just bring cards and gum and a slim camera and my phone. That sort of seems like all I'll need. Plus, it doesn't hut my shoulders 🙂

  38. Barbie says:

I have a puppy who's four months old today. I love wearing black, and he's white (supposed to be, he's a kid, so he plays a lot in all the dirt he can find) so the normal thing would be me covered in his hair. But he's a kind of dog that doesn't shed, but his hair grows just like on a human. That means I have to cut his hair when he grows, but at least I can wear as much black as I like. In theory, that is.

About the small purses, I tried to downsize my supersized bag since I have the same problem as you. I gave up after half an hour of hard work and simply put my small bag inside the big one.

  39. Stephanie says:

    1. Your eye makeup looks totally amazing today.

    2. I love the black dress with ruffly feminine vest. Rock and Roll yet still girly.

    3. Take 2 aleve now and 2 aleve this evening. I have back pain almost everyday. Besides the pain meds from the Dr., aleve is what takes the edge off. Feel better. =)

  40. elizabethashleyphoto says:

    LOVE your makeup!

I'm a fan of the huge bags too, and I've recently started trying to downsize. First thing I did was get one of those "magic wallets" with the credit card slots on the outside (I got mine at Target very recently and my friend has a cute one from J Crew), and I have my license, credit card, and some cash in there. That fits in a wristlet clutch with my phone, keys, and lip balm.

I keep the wristlet in a bigger tote to take into work and that has all my other crap like notebook, makeup, bigger wallet with more cards and cash, coupons, etc. I don't carry my big bag anywhere except into and out of the office, and I take my wristlet with me to lunch break.

I also downsized my keyring. I had several keychains and went down to one slim one, and I got rid of all the extra keys that had accumulated on there that I didnt need anymore. I had to do that so they would fit in my wristlet.

    Good luck!

  41. alwaystheforest says:

I carry a small/mostly empty purse, but my shoulders still hurt from lots of sewing and piano playing! Stretching really helps with the soreness, if you remember to do it.

But yeah, all I carry in my purse is my wallet, keys, phone, pen, lip balm, and multi-tool. 🙂

  42. Grace says:

The only things you need to carry with you ALL THE TIME: mobile phone, wallet, keys, lip balm, small toiletries bag for whatever necessities, notebook, pen, novel. Simple and surprisingly easy to fit into a small bag.

  43. Charlotte says:

Wow! You're style is just so amazing.

I try to keep myself away from the places in my house that I know have alot of hair on the furnitures and so on.
And with the bag problem, I think I've got the same problem too. I can't have a bag that's not full of items, haha. And well, I've got a pretty big camera so it's tough to make it fit in a small bag, so I try to have medium bag with not so much stuff in it, but I do not alwasy succed.

    Love your blog!

  44. MrJeffery says:

gorgeous photos. love the necklace & the heels.

  45. sweetersalt.com says:

As for the black comment, I feel ya'. I have a short haired, light colored dog whose little hairs prick their way right into all my clothes. To be honest, the best way to deal with it is to get dressed 5 minutes before you leave the house! If I am planning on wearing a black dress I don't wear it at home. Kinda sucks, but it saves on lint brush time like whoa.

  46. Anonymous says:

what nail polish are you wearing? looks very nice!

  47. KT says:

I’m a big purse girl too, but when I downsize I put my credit cards, money, drivers license, etc.. into a cute business card case. It’s compact and holds a lot. Then I take my phone, favorite lip gloss and I’m good to go.

  48. Anonymous says:

    Hey 🙂

Can you tell us how you get your hair like that (when you wear it up) is it just a poinytail/messy bun? Or clipped?

  49. Mandy says:

ME-OW. I feel ya on the animal fur on black. As others have suggested, not dressing until you're ready to bold the place is a good tip. However, I find the problem follows me in my car because I've wallowed in the seats in regular clothes that are covered in fur but don't show it so much. Lint rollers travel with me….What sucks is that the inside of cardigans, etc are all fur covered so once I've rolled for lint, I end up putting it right back on when I cover up… It's a good thing we love animals.

    You're gorgeous, as always.

  50. katrina says:

I am so smitten with your outfit! I love the dress paired with the vest (I need to live closer to an H&M!). Don't even get me started with your necklace and eyeshadow matching… it's gorgeous!

  51. stylefyles says:

Ahh I love this outfit! So cute! The color palette is perfect and the volume of the dress and skirt together is just right.

I think bag size has to do with makeup….I barely wear any, so all I carry with me is mascara and lip gloss. It's seriously a huge space saver to not lug make up around!

  52. ...on the brink of something beautiful says:

im the same way in regards to having giant purses and stuffing them to the max with things. glad im not alone in that one…

love this dress! and your eye makeup looks amazing!!!

  53. Erin Cathleen says:

Wow, the ruffled vest with this dress just takes the cake! I love this look! It's such a great take on neutral with subtle hints of jade. You, my dear, are a genius. 🙂

  55. Elle says:

When I go to work, I always seem to carry one of the smaller Strand bags (the totebags that are sold at The Strand Bookstore – I often use them instead of a purse), but then I also end up carrying a larger totebag, too. I have a long-ish commute & like to keep a book & bottle of water in my bag for the subway.

I think the small-bag people tend to keep the makeup that they carry around with them VERY minimal – maybe just a lip gloss or a lipstick, that's it. I do this sometimes if I'm going out somewhere at night (and want to take a small purse). Taking money out of a wallet also helps — since wallets tend to take up a lot of room.

  56. Ashley says:

I love your makeup, it compliments your eye color so swimmingly!

  57. holly wang says:

i always carry a ton of unncessary stuff too! but the trick with the small bags is to just do the essentials: phone, keys, wallet. and sometimes i carry a mirror compact or headphones or something else i think i'll need in the day that is small.

  58. Grazia C. says:

your make up is ever AMAZING!

  59. Trishna says:

I have a huge bag but also a chronic lower back ache, so unfortunately I can't carry my life around in my bag. On weekdays, I just take the things I absolutely need for work, wallet, pen, small notepad, burts bees, cell phone, keys, water bottle. On weekends, I just take a tiny clutch and carry a water bottle in hand.

It's also important to clean your bag every week because no matter how hard I try the random receipts and other knick knacks somehow find their way in.

Thanks for the pet related tips dear ladies, I have a white pup, so a lint roller is my best friend. I have one in every room of my house and at work. 🙂

  60. dandra says:

I love carrying a big bag, but after a few weeks my shoulder/chest ends up hurting and I have to downsize for a little while. Currently I am carrying one of Jenny's travelers. I love her bags! I got to meet her and she is just so sweet.

To downsize, I change my wallet to a small credit card holder (just enough room for my cards, ID, and cash). I have slimmed down my keys (no key fobs). I only take one lip gloss or lipstick. I leave the mirror behind (the restroom has one).

And for those "what if" times I have a small kit that I made with everything I could possibly need. It has booby pins, a ponytail holder, a lint sheet, floss, blotting sheets, hand sanitizer, nail polish remover, cough drop, etc. And all of it fits in a small case about the size of a digital camera.

  61. Erica says:

Ugh! I carry around random things like lotion (not the travel size either) and work gloves…and an umbrella. The list goes on. Why can't I survive without these things?

  62. April says:

When I went to New York in January my friend marveled at my lack of handbag. She asked where all my stuff was and I replied "Coat pockets." I usually carry my phone, ID, debit card, camera and lip balm.
I do have curly hair so there is no need to carry around a hair brush, and if I wear makeup at all I don't touch it up during the day.
If I carry a bag I may also have my full wallet and some hand cream.

I used to carry around a backpack full of crap when I was younger, then I ditched it.

  63. Christy says:

Yes unfortunally animals and black just don't go together. I still love both though….

I can relate to the dying of back pain from heavy bags though the culprit in my case is usually school books.

  65. Vintage Hippo says:

I have two pomeranians so I feel your pain! I usually keep a new tennis ball handy, and rub the hair off with ease. And as for the purse thing, i only need an organized wallet, keys, red lipstick and ipod. 🙂

  66. Erin says:

Gorgeous outfit, this might be my all time favorite one you have posted.

  67. Raquel says:

I was like you, but found to leave the things I used rarely at home, sometimes it's just the bank card, ID, drivers license, money purse, keys, and cell phone all in a tiny bag 🙂
I have 4 dogs and a cat who now just had babies, and I'm always brushing my clothes but they're always with some sort of animal hair :/

  68. Shoe says:

Hi Keiko! I just love your blog.

I'm also like that with the huge bags, but I've developed a strategy for when I carry smaller bags. I go out one day with a big bag and make a note of everything I used from the bag that day.

Invariably its my keys, lip balm, handphone, wallet, ipod, that kind of thing. Everything else I don't use in one day, I assume I don't need. So for days when I downsize, I stick to that list. I don't know if that helps at all, because I am a bag FREAK and I know how all-consuming the urge is to carry all your stuff around!

  69. Addie says:

I don't wear black very often as my cats are siamese. Recently, I bought a small furminator (deshedding brush) on ebay and it's really amazing. Their fur are short, but I manage to take off a handful of fur almost every day.
I have a black short which is still covered of white… but it's just the beginning, I'll see this winter!

  70. Shellie says:

I have to omment because I absolutely love your makeup today. And your necklace, and your dress, and your vest/shoulder thingy, and your shoes, and that bag… oh wait, your hairstyle too. Because you're just awesome like that. : )
I haven't got any tips for you though, I usually use small purses but I manage about 10 lbs of stuff.

  71. Piia says:

Oh, you always hae the most perfect outfits . Everything is completely thought out and the colours always match. Super! 🙂
    This outfit is no exception!

  72. Piia says:

hehe, I commented before reading 🙂
My favourite bag is quite small, it fits the essentials for me: phone, wallet, keys. All. Everything else(magazines, bottle of water,…) I just carry .
Although you wrote that you like to take with you and extra pair of flats every day.So I suggest you wore them , and leave the heels home.
When I carry a bigger bag, I throw everything in there: the book, I'm currently reading, hair-brush, make-up, sunnies and ordinary glasses + phone, wallet, keys, which I never manage to find in my bag, when I need them:)

  73. Becca Jane says:

I am a big purse girl myself, and I always seem to fill them too! So I'm afraid I won't be much help in the downsizing tips department

  74. Santina says:

I have a white kitty who seems to like black clothing just as much as I do. Walking out of the house without at least a dozen white hairs is impossible although it's hard to tell if their mine at times as I have bleached white short hair. 🙂 I will admit that I keep a lint roller at my desk at work; I think the key is to de-hair yourself after you're out of house. I also try to keep my little guy out of my closet, but I'm not always successful in that attempt. Cats always seem to win!

I can help you…just imagine that some douchebag steals your purse/bag while your walking around the city. Can you deal with losing all that stuff you carry around?
I made the mistake of carrying around a bunch of diamond/gold jewelry in a tiny ziplock bag in my purse because i intended to one day visit a pawn shop, well before that day came, some jerk robbed my entire purse off the back of the chair i was sitting in at wendy's across the street from the empire state building, while on my lunchbreak from work to top it off. he ended up getting my cell phone, monthly metro card, keys, entire wallet, all that jewelry, and the actual purse.
ever since then, i carry as little as possible in my bag and never more than $20 cash. I was robbed twice in manhattan, once at knifepoint….so maybe that story might help you think of why it's best not to carry your life in your bag. 🙂 and it will do your back wonders.

In response to the animal-lover question: I happen to be the proud mommy of two black toy poodles and they don't shed! My man, however, has three fluffy mutts. I make sure to have my closet set high, so they can't reach my clothes. It's just a matter of being careful. My boyfriend makes fun of me for wearing a trashbag over dresses that tend to attract fur in the house but, it works. I'd rather be furry and have my baby boys then perfectly clean and dogless anyway.
