It recently hit me that I’ve been in Brooklyn for seven years, which seems like a lifetime when I consider my original thought of “trying it out” for one. I never had a plan for where to go next; I just liked knowing that moving was an option. I went by myself, and knew almost no one…and I needed an out, just in case. But marking that emergency exit with a one year time stamp meant that at the very least, I had to give it a shot. That’s how I approach most things in life: if it doesn’t work out, you can always change your course. It makes everything just a little less intimidating, and you’d be surprised how many happy accidents have come from this school of thought.
Born and raised in South Florida, I was certain I would freeze to death during my first real winter. Lane (my roommate) and I both ran outside and were giddy and grinning like little kids for our first snow. Both of us in our early twenties, seeing snow for the first time: I’ll remember that forever, as a defining “we’re not in Florida anymore” moment. Having our apartment fill up with steam because our radiators weren’t connected (and calling the fire department because we didn’t know what was going on) was another one of those. But the snow was happier, so that one goes in the scrapbook.
As it turned out, I did freeze that winter – but not to death, of course, or else this post would be a lot cooler because it would be coming from a ghost. It took me a few years to find the balance between being warm and looking like a functional, stylish lady (and not a walking sleeping bag), but I eventually embraced the cozy and myriad layers that come with dropping temperatures, and even came to love it.
Which brings me to some exciting news I’d like to share: I joined the UGG Australia Creative Council for the upcoming season, to share my take on winter style. If you haven’t heard of the Creative Council before, it’s a personal project-centric alliance that was created as a platform to explore inspiring endeavors and share that inspiration with others. With that being said, my project is not just about getting dressed, it’s about sharing my favorite winter experiences. Having complete creative freedom is my favorite part of the job, and I have some fun things planned to share with you. In the meantime, check out my welcome video and try not to laugh at how awkward I am on video. Or laugh, but just don’t tell me about it.
