Halloween Costume Idea: Easy Deer Makeup Tutorial

easy deer makeup tutorial for halloween, fawn makeup

Products used:

Too Faced “Born This Way” foundation in Ivory (and matching concealer)

Ben Nye “Neutral Set” translucent setting powder

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette (a few different shades of brown for contouring the nose, cheeks, forehead, lining eyes, brows, etc)

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in “Backtalk”

Ben Nye “Clown White” for dots

Ben Nye “Creme Black” for the nose

I bought these costume antlers (which are kind of a pain, so I wish I would’ve gotten the smaller ones) a couple years ago with the intention of doing deer makeup, but never got around to using them. As I was packing for my trip to Florida, I came across them and threw them in my suitcase. What I didn’t do, however, was pack any extra makeup. So all I had to work with was what I already had in my travel case, which luckily included some Ben Nye stage makeup (which I used for my cartoon makeup tutorial) and the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette. Since I’m not much of a bronzer girl (save for Snow Bunny, which I love for a subtle glow) and didn’t have any contour shades packed, I relied almost solely on the Naked Ultimate Basics for this look. Since the shades are matte and there are so many to choose from, it ended up being a perfect fit! Want to learn how to recreate this easy deer makeup for Halloween? Follow my step by step deer makeup tutorial:

  1. Start with a foundation base and set with powder. I also defined my brows and applied Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in “Backtalk” because I was running last minute errands before starting this tutorial, and would otherwise look dead with a face of foundation and nothing else!
  2. Contour around the forehead and cheekbones, using a darker shade of brown toward the outside and blending inward with lighter shades.
  3. Use a large fluffy brush to blend it all out so there are no harsh lines, and drag the residual shadow through your jawline to give it some definition.
  4. Use a thinner brush to contour the sides of the nose, connecting to your brows.
  5. Use a thin angle brush to draw a line beneath your eyes, creating the illusion of larger eyes, then connect it into your crease.
  6. Blend out the outer crease.
  7. Draw on a nose with creme black makeup.
  8. Use a q-tip to dab on white makeup in little dots. Add antlers and an optional flower crown, and you’re done!

So if you had everything that you ideally need…how would you do the make up?

    • Keiko Lynn says:

I wouldn’t have used just an eye makeup palette, because 1. it’s really meant for eyes, and 2. it wastes a lot of product, since the palette shadows are so small! I would use darker bronzer, a creme stick meant for stage makeup, or a larger pan of shadow.
