Our Favorite TV Shows To Binge Watch

Keiko: Holly and I both love TV. I’m not one of those New Yorkers who threw away my television when I moved here. We both prefer working with something on in the background, and as much as I love shows like Game Of Thrones, it is the type of show where I have to stop everything and give it my full attention (not mad about it). That’s where some of these shows come in: they’re mostly easy watches. With the exception of Marcella and 6 Feet Under, you can put any of these on while you’re working and feel like you’re multi-tasking.

Holly: I honestly watch more tv than anybody else I know. Because I work from home most of the time, I often have tv on in the background as noise while I’m working and after work I watch even more tv. With so many options these days, it seems like there is a never ending supply of quality tv being produced or old shows to revisit. I have a lot of friends who ask me for recommendations, I love finding old tv shows I might not have known about in my youth, and I actively follow tv news (what new shows are being developed, what is being canceled, checking ratings for my favorite shows in hopes they won’t get canceled.) Sometimes I think my true calling in life was to work in television. So I put together a list with Keiko of some of our favorites tv shows to binge watch this winter! Get cozy on the couch and turn on your tv!

New Shows To Watch

tv shows to binge watch - The Great British Bake Off
The Great British Bake Off – Holly: If you need to unwind after a long work day, this show is for you! For being a reality competition show, it’s surprisingly soothing. The competitors are all supportive of one another, and the hosts are quirky and fun. Plus the show has tons of delicious looking sweet treats! It’s impossible not to love this show! Once you’ve finished this show, switch on over to The Big Family Cooking Showdown. It’s a spin-off of GBBO with former winner, Nadiya Hussain, as one of the hosts.

Keiko: Holly turned me onto this show, and at first I didn’t think it would be my thing. I’m typically not a cooking show kind of person, and assumed it would be just another one those. I found myself completely enveloped in the show in no time, attached to each and every contestant. It’s just such a feel good show. Nothing cutthroat, no petty dramas, just a heartwarming, wholesome bake-off.

The Good Place – Keiko: I’m completely forking in love with this show and its characters. Ted Danson is fantastic in his role, and Janet is possibly my current favorite character on television. The Good Place explores the afterlife, where there is no Heaven or Hell as we perceive it — just The Good Place and The Bad Place. The Good Place, “…brought to you by two otters holding hands” is a utopia of dream houses, soulmates, unlimited fro-yo, and an all knowing being named Janet to assist your every needs. When the main character (played by Kristen Bell) wakes up in The Good Place, she knows she isn’t meant to be there, and there are lots of twists along the way. I’ll leave it at that!

Holly: You might expect a show about the afterlife to be depressing or morbid, but The Good Place is lighthearted and funny. One of my favorite things about this show is they incorporate discussions on ethics and what it means to be a “good person” without it becoming preachy OR too intellectual. It’s also fun to see their interpretation of the afterlife and what they come up with like the soda fountain that dispenses shrimp and sauce or Janet the all knowing robot (note from Keiko: “not a robot”).

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - tv shows to binge watch
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Holly: When Amazon debuted the pilot for this show, I was immediately hooked (and then had to wait months for season 1 to become available.) If you haven’t heard of this show, stop what you are doing right now and go watch it! It was definitely one of the most hyped shows in late 2017, and all of the hype was well deserved! Despite being set in the late 1950s, I feel like women can still relate to Midge’s struggles 60 years later. The show dives into the complexities of being an independent woman in the 50s and fighting gender norms, while still being totally hilarious. Also I have to mention how great the costuming is on this show, I wouldn’t mind if Midge’s wardrobe appeared in my closet.

The Crown – Holly: If you’re into historical fiction, biopics, or any drama – this show is for you! The cast does a stunning job portraying the royal family in both their public and private moments. I think one of the reasons this show has been so captivating is because you feel like you’re getting a behind the scenes look at their lives (although not 100% accurately portrayed in the show.) Season 2 is even more scandalous than season 1, and the fact that this is mostly based on fact is crazy! I certainly learned a few things I didn’t know about the royal family, that also evolved into late night Wikipedia/Google researching. I’m a little bummed that Season 3 will have a brand new cast as they move into a new decade with the royal family. Claire Foy’s performance as Queen Elizabeth II is one of the highlights of this show!

Marcella – Keiko: Anyone remember the show Pushing Daisies? It was one of my absolute favorite shows and I was so sad when it was cancelled. Well, the darling lady who played Chuck has another great show, Marcella, and spoiler alert: it’s nothing like Pushing Daisies. The title character is an ex detective returning to investigate a serial killer after the end of her marriage. It’s dark, mysterious, and absolutely thrilling. If you like British procedurals, put this on your list.

Grace & Frankie – Keiko: The new season of Grace & Frankie is out today (and I am almost done with the season)! Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda have fantastic comedic chemistry and I fell in love with them all over again.

Holly: Grace & Frankie are two 70+ women who are starting over and rediscovering themselves after marriage/parenting, and the power of a friendship between two women. I think one of the major reasons this show stands out to me is that they cover topics that aren’t usually featured on television with humor which makes it that much more approachable. You will love this show if you are looking for a comedy with some more adult focused jokes or if you just love a show with strong leading ladies!

Oldies But Goodies Worth Revisiting

tv shows to binge watch, tv shows to revisit, six feet under
Six Feet Under – Keiko: Several friends and I agreed that this was one of the best shows, ever, and with the best ending. This show follows the Fishers and their family-owned funeral home in California. Each episode begins with a death, setting the tone for each episode that explores not only death, but sexuality, coming of age, resurgence, and the relationships around them. There are five seasons, so get to binge watching.

Gilmore Girls – Holly: This is one of my all time favorite shows and ever since it’s been on Netflix I have rewatched the entire series multiple times. It had a resurgence when it became available on Netflix, and once again when they did the reunion episodes. The original is so good, especially the early seasons. I love the quippy fast banter between Lorelai and Rory, and the show is dramatic enough without being over the top like some other early 2000s tv shows. I probably understand more pop culture references in the show as an adult than when I was watching it on air as a teen. Plus, I’m always amazed/envious of the characters ability to eat that much junk food!

Keiko: I have to admit, I never watched a whole lot of Gilmore Girls when it was on, and I wasn’t sure it would stand the test of time. Needing something light to watch (I watch a lot of dark stuff), I put on Gilmore Girls and fell in love with Lorelai and Rory.

My So Called Life – Keiko: If there were one show that I could fully relate to as a child in the 90s, it would have to be My So Called Life. I had my very own Jordan Catalano, and though I was a little more of a goody two-shoes than Angela Chase (she had her moments of being very daring, in my eyes), I felt like we were a lot alike. Teen angst, at its finest. Only one season, so this is a snowed-in day at home kind of binge watch. I must have seen this whole show at least 20 times.

Friends – Keiko: Friends is one of those shows that can be on at any time of day and I will always be happy to watch it. I tried to play it cool when I interviewed Jennifer Aniston, but every fiber of my being was saying, “OMG you’re talking to Rachel!” This show is probably the most obvious on the list (which is why there is little description), but since some of my readers are younger and have apparently never watched the show (yes, I’m screaming), I had to include it on the list. I probably quote this show at least once a day. Maybe it’s not a realistic depiction of life in NYC, but that’s what makes it fun.

tv shows to binge watch, tv shows to rewatch, beverly hills 90210
Beverly Hills, 90210 – Keiko: I was pretty young when Beverly Hills, 90210 came out, so it made me feel very adult when I watched it. My friend Helena was recently shocked to learn that I was team Brandon and not brooding Dylan, but in my defense, I was literally 6 when it started and Dylan was a little too much of a bad boy for little tiny me. Centered around a bunch of teens in Beverly Hills, this drama has everything: romance, friendships, backstabbing, cheating, and honestly a lot of heavy stuff that child me didn’t understand. Let’s watch it!

Felicity – Holly: For some reason this show above all others reminds me of the peculiar time when you are a faux grown up in college. All 4 seasons of this show examines the time when you’ve left home, you’re living away from your family for the first time, so you have the illusion of being an adult but you haven’t quite figured out how to navigate the world yet. Plus I’ve always loved the fact that Felicity was from Palo Alto (my hometown) which made me instantly feel like I had a connection to the show. PS- Isn’t it so strange that J. J. Abrams created this show? Yes, the same J. J. Abrams who created the tv shows Lost and Fringe!

Keiko: Felicity and that curly, dreamy hair. Remember when the world went into total meltdown when she cut it? I love this show. To me, it’s not quite as sappy/cheesy as some other teen dramas.

I also recently came across this list of the best TV Murder Mysteries to binge watch. I have to admit I’ve already watched a number of these shows, but if you’re a true crime lover like me – take a look!
