Vintage Style: 5 Black Creators to Follow

When you look through your instagram feed, is it filled with people who look like you? There has been a lot of talk about diversifying your feed, an easy but important action to follow through on, because it’s all too often that we find ourselves in echo chambers. We might look for ourselves in what we admire — one reason why representation is such a passionate topic — and that can lead to a somewhat homogeneous feed.

The accounts you already follow and interact with help dictate Instagram’s suggestions, so if your feed is not already diverse, you’re probably getting an equally white-washed explore page. Have you ever noticed that when you add a new account, it gives you a handful of related suggestions? Following Black creators (and other POC) whose accounts are tailored to your interests will lead you to discover more and more you’re likely missing.

5 Black Creators to Follow: Vintage Style

This is by no means an exhaustive list, as I decided to focus on a small group of creators and give proper introductions. This week, I’m featuring 5 vintage style accounts that I know you’ll love.

If you follow me because you love vintage style, check out:

@Randinicholejoan

@Randinicholejoan Randi’s ode to Twiggy, Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, and Audrey Hepburn were some of my favorite posts on instagram, ever. You can also see more outfits and beauty tutorials on Randi’s blog, which has over 100k subscribers!

@the.pinup.doll

@the.pinup.doll is a vintage dream, and a Disney lover, too! If you’re following me on instagram, you might recognize her from our “Pass the Brush” video or our group Stay Home PSA. If you’re on tiktok, make sure you also give her a follow there. She shares a lot more Disney content on there, if you’re currently wishing you could be back at Disney World (like me). Her videos with Tiana always make me so happy.

@missgolden_lady

@missgolden_lady The first time I came across Ranitra’s account, I audibly gasped. And then spent way too much time scrolling through her photos. She’s another lover of vintage AND Disney, so clearly, we have some things in common:) What I love most about her style is how she plays with so many different eras. Also, her Disney style is THE best I have ever seen. Can you believe her style? I’m in love.

@karenbritchick

@karenbritchick Karen is one of the very first bloggers I ever met in real life. And she’s still one of my absolute favorites. (She and her husband are also incredibly lovely human beings, which is a bonus.) I was originally going to feature her in the category of “overall style inspiration” because she isn’t strictly vintage (nor am I). But I think she also deserves a spot in the vintage category because she demonstrates how to incorporate vintage in a modern wardrobe.

What I love about her style is that she’s a little bit 70s but not completely retro. Even when wearing head to toe vintage, she brings a modern (and often romantic) twist to it. Make sure you check out her Youtube channel. I don’t watch a lot of Youtube (mainly because I find myself in a rabbit hole and can’t stop watching?). But she’s one of the few whose videos I watch regularly.

romantic, vintage aesthetic with a modern wardrobe

@Mossonyi

@Mossonyi Onyi has perfected a romantic, vintage aesthetic with a modern wardrobe. Her photography is absolutely stunning, and she is incredibly generous with her knowledge and tips. There’s an entire section of her site dedicated to free resources, where she offers a free photography e-book, Lightroom presets (both mobile and desktop), and instagram templates, and she updates her blog regularly. p.s. I would suggest making a small donation to a charitable organization if you download her resources, as a token of your appreciation!
