Creative At Home Photoshoot Idea
Shooting indoors in a small New York apartment can feel extremely limiting, if you think only in terms of your surroundings. It would get a little tiring if all I did was pose in front of the same 3 spots for 6 months — so I’ve been getting a little more creative with my photo process. I keep my living room set up as a makeshift photo studio so I can shoot at any hour, but I still prefer shooting with natural light whenever possible.
It just so happens that my room gets some of the nicest natural light at every time of day, but it’s so tiny that I either have to pose on or directly next to the bed. No problem! Like my previous blanket fort shoot, I decided to shoot on the bed but make it a little more interesting by playing with fabric. I have this gorgeous Lirika Matoshi skirt that I’ve worn a lot over the years (see it here, here, and here) and thought it would make the photo more interesting. I often like to shoot through fabrics, or play with textures in photos. In this case, I did both. Everything in the photo was pink, but the tint of the tulle gave it even more of a blush tone. I liked that it had a Sleeping Beauty vibe.
This whole shoot took maybe 10 minutes and no wild setup.
Grab some fabric and get creative! Use it as a backdrop, put it over your lens for a DIY filter, throw it around for some dreamy movement.
Lirika Matoshi skirt can be found here (although mine is an earlier version, slightly different), and they also make two dress versions (here and here) and a top. Rachel Comey makes a sheer belt skirt with different sheer fabric options or you can get a bargain tulle skirt on Amazon (I have several). Or! Just buy a few yards of tulle from your local fabric shop.
