60s Sister Jane

Who would’ve thought my favorite hair accessory would be a shoelace with some hot glued daisies? That is, save for all the fake hair I have piled on my head to create this retro vibe! I bought a bolt of shoelaces when elastic and bias tape were scarce (seems like a lifetime ago) and I was doing little but making cloth masks for healthcare and essential workers. Once I found a restock of elastic and bias tape, I used some of the leftover shoelaces to make some easy, retro hair accessories. I’ve been wearing them quite a bit. In fact, I’ve been wearing things I’ve made myself more often than not — but that’s for another post, because I didn’t make this dreamy little dress.

Over the years, I’ve bought several dresses from Sister Jane.

They’re available on ASOS and more recently, Shopbop! They always have dreamy, whimsical dresses that feel a bit retro — clearly, my kinda vibe. Like something one might wear in a giant old dollhouse. I paired this particular mini dress — which I altered ever so slightly with a shoulder pleat (to make the shoulder seam line up with my shoulder a bit better) — with my favorite tulle socks from Lirika Matoshi and my tried and true velvet sandals from years past. I loved these sandals so much, I also bought them in a red suede. Psst! You can still find them second hand on eBay and other sites if you look up “J.Crew Penny Sandals.”

That reminds me: I get questions about my outfits pretty often, and since a lot of what I wear is either vintage or past seasons, don’t forget to check secondhand sites like Ebay, etsy, poshmark, depop, etc. Whenever something is easily shoppable, like this dress, you can also bookmark it and watch for sales or take note so you can search for it secondhand at a later date. It’s how I’ve found so many pricier items for a major discount.
