Cure Hat Head On The Go

I wear hats pretty often. If my hair is down, it’s almost a guarantee that a hat will somehow make its way onto my head at some point. I just like hats. But about halfway through the day, when my head starts to get a little uncomfortable under said hat, I usually regret my accessory choice. By that point I’m either stuck with it or have to throw up my hair in a haphazard bun, because taking it off leaves me with crimped, flat hat head…and I rarely have a brush with me. My bags seem to get smaller and smaller, to the point where I even swapped out my regular wallet for a card holder (funny when I think about it, since I used to carry GIANT bags). When Heather sent me my own personalized Go-Comb, which is the size of a credit card and slips right into my wallet, I knew exactly what I would use it for. Tease the roots, smooth out the bangs, comb the hair — no more hat head! Of course, it can be used for more than that, but it’s a particularly handy tool for my fickle, hat loving/loathing self. But more than anything, I just loved the story behind Go-Comb and the fact that it was dreamt up by a Brooklyn gal who combined her knowledge of function and design to make a really handy little comb and built it into a thriving business.

Go-Comb was invented by Heather Burkman, who wondered why no one made a comb that could fit inside a wallet, after watching her uncle use a black plastic comb that he awkwardly stored in his pocket. She set to work and made a prototype at a space in Brooklyn (actually, near my studio — small world!) and within a couple of weeks, put them on Etsy. Since then, she’s grown her business from a small online shop to being carried in hundreds of stores, and there are many different Go-Comb options available. Though I’m partial to my mirrored and customized comb — I love anything that has my name on it, because I can never find my name in souvenir shops! — she even has some with bottle openers on the side. Wouldn’t they make cute gifts? I’m imagining pairing individually customized combs with a monogrammed card holder and giving them as bridesmaid or groomsman gifts. Check them out and support a fellow Brooklynite!
