Halloween Couples Costume Idea: Mary Poppins and Bert
Many moons ago, Bobby and I dressed as Mary Poppins and Bert for Halloween. It continues to be one of our most popular posts, and is by far our most popular costume. Unfortunately, I lost all of the original photos and was left with my tiny 400 pixel memories. Seven years later, I decided it was time for us to recreate Mary Poppins and Bert, with a few updates. Hi, parrot head umbrella…thank you for completing my Mary Poppins costume. Mary Poppins is one of my all time favorite movies, and Dick Van Dyke was one of my earliest crushes. I don’t think I was fully aware that he was not only much older than I was, but also much older than the characters I watched on television. I used to stay up very late at night and watch Dick Van Dyke. The alternate intros of tripping and skipping around the ottoman; I mean, he’s got the moves, you know? But Mary Poppins…oh, Mary Poppins. I know every line, every lyric, and have its album hanging on my wall, right above my television. Mary Poppins made me believe in magic and left me in absolute wonder. My Mary Poppins costume continues to be my favorite, to date. She is, of course, practically perfect in every way.
The great thing about a Mary Poppins costume is that you’ll most likely be able to recreate her look with items from your personal wardrobe. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I dressed up a felt bowler hat with dollar store daisies and thrifted garland, pinned a bow to my ruffle blouse, and pulled out my vintage tapestry bag and gloves for the finishing touches. The navy skirt is from Amazon (I guess I’m their very unofficial Prime spokesperson, this Halloween…) but I have to warn you that it runs a little large, so size down.
Bobby’s outfit was even easier to put together — guys have it so easy, sometimes! He didn’t have a red neckerchief, so he cut up some red socks and sewed them together. What a clever guy. He also got a black broom and spread out the ends to look like a chimney sweep. Chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim chim cheree!
“Step in time!”
