I never really developed in the chest area; I wore training bras until…well, I could probably still get away with wearing them. But hips, on the other hand – I’ve had what have been referred to as “birthin’ hips” as far back as middle school. Back then, I wore extra large t-shirts and short BONGO shorts that masked my wide hips and the fact that I had a completely flat chest. It was a good look (it wasn’t). I didn’t dare try to fake it with a stuffed bra, though if I ever did, I would’ve tried the pudding technique, à la Teeny in Now and Then. Be honest – how many of you did that?
That being said, I never had nor do I have an issue with my hips. Without them, I would have no curves at all. But maxi skirts like this tend to magnify how very hippy I am and I never thought it was a very flattering silhouette on me. Somewhere along the way, I decided I didn’t give a crap, just like I decided in high school that being a part of the IBTC was something to be celebrated and not hidden under oversized shirts. We may not have boobs, but we have cheaper bras! And I may have big hips, but I’m wearing whatever the hell I feel like wearing. Downright rebellious, I am. Throw caution to the wind!
Plus, on this particular day, I had two people stop me to tell me I looked beautiful. That never happens! Who said New Yorkers aren’t nice?
