Pitches Night In

The Bellas are back for one last call in Pitch Perfect 3. In celebration of the Blu-Ray release with new musical performances, gag reel and extended scenes not seen in theaters, I was sent a package full of aca-awesome treats for a “Pitches Night In” with my girlfriends. There are few things I enjoy more than quality girl time. Some of my favorite childhood memories are from sleepover parties. We’d watch movies, eat treats, play games, paint our nails, do crazy hairstyles. We even used to make ridiculous movies of our own — it was an event. While it’s a little tough to get grown women to commit to an actual sleepover these days — we live in New York apartments, after all —I thought I would recreate that vibe with a girls’ night full of all those things. Come to think of it, it’s a little like the Barden Bellas in the newest installment: all grown up and living the struggle of real life, but in need of a little reunion with their girls.

Anytime I’m entertaining, I use it as an excuse to stock up on treats from my favorite bakeries  — and make sure everyone eats them so I get them out of my apartment! Pitch Perfect 3 provided the fun cups and popcorn (and fun shirts for me and my friends!), and I picked up some candy because how can I watch a movie without it? I have to admit that I am not a cook and I almost always feed my guests with casual catering or takeout, but Bobby kindly prepared some porta-Bella burgers (get it?! I felt clever), which are so easy that even I could make them…except, I didn’t. Just marinate them in a good balsamic vinaigrette and cook them on the grill or in a skillet and then dress them up as you like, just as you would with a regular burger. Bobby always heat the buns inside the oven to get the cheese nice and melty.

I love having games on hand for when friends are over, and this Sing It Back card game was a perfect fit for a movie night about an all-girl a cappella group. You sing the lyrics to a song and your teammate has to sing the following lyrics correctly, which is kind of hilarious if you’re the type of person who doesn’t listen to the lyrics (Hold me closer, Tony Danza). And naturally, I made use of the nail polishes that Pitch Perfect 3 sent, because is it a girls’ night in if you’re not doing masks or nails?
